St. James Woodworkers Community Service Project
Toys for Tots began in 1947 and in 1991 at the request of the Marine Corps, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation was established to help run and support the Toys for Tots program. On a national level, more than 7,000,000 toys are distributed at Christmas to needy children. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity.
Local Impact in Brunswick and Columbus Counties
In 2019, 16,776 toys were distributed to 5,322 children; 97% of funds raised go to purchasing toys to make up the shortfall in donated toys.
As of August 2020, locally, 350 toys have been donated. In a typical year, there would be 1,500 toys donated by August. So locally the need is great.
St. James Woodworkers Toy Drive
Our goal is to donate a minimum of 100 toys. This may be a stretch goal since we’re not meeting, but we believe we’re up to the task. Our website has a sample of toy plans and safe construction guidelines. You are not limited to these plans, but remember … safe toys (see guidelines.
Please e-mail our project coordinator Wayne Kruger (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you will be stepping up to make a toy, or lots of toys. All toys must be complete and turned in by November 1, 2020.
There will be three collection times (dropoff points will be determined and announced later):
- September 30
- October 15
- November 1
Please affix your name to each toy with your name printed on masking tape (for tracking purposes as to who is participating; the tape will be removed prior to donation).
Please step up, make a toy and put a smile on a child’s face on Christmas morning.
